Reading about memory and Barthes (again again)

Stumbled upon this quote about families and photographs: Family is structured by desire and disappointment, love and loss. Photographs, as the only material traces of an irrecoverable past, derive their power and their important cultural role from their embeddedness in the fundamental rites of family life..." (Marianne Hirsh, Family Frames, p. 5)

I have about 5000 photo slides from my grandparents' vacations that need to be scanned... ugh.. and a volkswagon van that can't drive that needs to be transported to Carlsberg! very exciting
